Ingredients

Units Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, defrosted if frozen
  • 3/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oven: Set the oven rack to the middle position and preheat the oven to 375ºF (190ºC). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside.
  2. Defrost the Puff Pastry: Thaw the puff pastry overnight in the fridge or let it sit at room temperature on a sheet tray until cool but pliable, about 40 minutes.
  3. Make the Seasoning Mix: In a small bowl, combine the paprika, dried Italian seasoning, kosher salt, and black pepper. Set aside.
  4. Roll Out the Puff Pastry: Lightly flour a surface and roll the puff pastry into a 12 x 10-inch rectangle approximately ⅛-inch thick. Dust lightly with flour if sticky.
  5. Add Egg Wash: Whisk together the egg and water in a small bowl. Brush this egg wash over the entire surface of the puff pastry.
  6. Add Seasoning and Cheese: Evenly sprinkle the seasoning mix and grated parmesan cheese over the egg-washed pastry.
  7. Press in the Toppings: Gently roll a rolling pin over the pastry to press the toppings into the dough for even adherence.
  8. Cut into Strips: Using a chef’s knife or pizza cutter, cut the pastry into approximately 12 strips, each 10 inches long and ¾ inch wide.
  9. Twist the Strips: Twist each strip gently and place them on the parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing them at least 1 inch apart. Brush each twist with additional egg wash.
  10. Bake: Bake the strips for 14 to 16 minutes until golden brown, puffed, and crisp. Repeat with the remaining strips if needed. Serve warm or cool on a wire rack before storing.

Notes

  • Store the cheese straws in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

  • For a different flavor, substitute parmesan with sharp cheddar or asiago cheese.
  • Use gluten-free puff pastry to make this recipe gluten-free.
