Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Dumplings

  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, plus more for pan
  • 2 Granny Smith apples
  • 2 (8-oz.) cans crescent roll dough

For the Sauce

  • 1 cup (165 g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 8 oz lemon-lime soda

For Serving

  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Apples: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and generously grease a large baking dish with butter. Peel and core the Granny Smith apples, then cut each apple into 8 evenly sized wedges to ensure they cook evenly.
  2. Wrap Apples in Crescent Dough: Separate crescent roll dough into individual triangles. Starting at the wider end of each triangle, carefully roll one apple wedge up inside the dough, ensuring it is fully wrapped. Repeat this process with the remaining apple wedges and dough pieces, then arrange the wrapped dumplings evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Make the Brown Sugar Sauce: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the unsalted butter, packed light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, pure vanilla extract, and a pinch of kosher salt. Stir frequently as the butter melts and the mixture becomes smooth and syrupy, which should take about 5 minutes. Be careful not to let it burn.
  4. Pour Sauce Over Dumplings: Pour the warm brown sugar sauce evenly over the apple dumplings in the baking dish, making sure each dumpling gets coated with the syrupy mixture.
  5. Add Lemon-Lime Soda: Carefully pour the lemon-lime soda around the edges of the pan, avoiding pouring directly on top of the dumplings to maintain their golden crust. The soda helps create a light and bubbly sauce during baking.
  6. Bake the Dumplings: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake the dumplings for about 30 minutes, or until they are golden brown and heated through. The sauce will thicken and bubble as it bakes.
  7. Serve Warm: Remove from the oven and divide the apple dumplings onto serving plates. Spoon some of the luscious sauce from the pan over the dumplings and serve immediately, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side for a delicious contrast of warm and cold.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith apples for their tartness and firm texture, which holds up well during baking.
  • You can substitute lemon-lime soda with a clear carbonated soda like club soda or 7-Up for a slightly different flavor.
  • For a richer flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the brown sugar sauce.
  • Make sure not to pour the soda directly on top of the dumplings to keep the crescent dough crispy on top.
  • Vanilla ice cream serves as the perfect accompaniment but whipped cream or caramel sauce can also be used.
