Units Scale

Base

  • Saltine crackers - enough to cover one baking sheet in a single layer

Toffee

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)

Toppings

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat for easy cleanup.
  2. Arrange crackers: Lay out the saltine crackers in a single, unbroken layer covering the entire baking sheet to form the base.
  3. Make toffee mixture: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter and stir in the brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly to combine and dissolve the sugar fully.
  4. Pour toffee over crackers: Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged saltine crackers, spreading it if necessary to cover all crackers.
  5. Bake the toffee: Place the baking sheet into the preheated oven and bake for 5 to 7 minutes until the toffee is bubbling and has fully coated the crackers.
  6. Add chocolate chips: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee-covered crackers, allowing them to melt from the residual heat.
  7. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar and salt: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture over the melted chocolate, then finish by lightly sprinkling sea salt evenly across the top.
  8. Cool and break: Allow the entire sheet to cool completely at room temperature so the toffee hardens. Once cooled, break into pieces and enjoy your churro saltine toffee.

Notes

  • Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  • Ensure the toffee mixture is boiling before pouring over crackers for proper caramelization.
  • For a stronger cinnamon flavor, adjust cinnamon quantity to your preference.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature to maintain crispness.
  • Sea salt enhances the flavor balance but can be omitted for a sweeter treat.
